Standing on the beach, surfboard in hand, I glanced over at my friend and asked, “I hope you know how to do a tourniquet.”
We were just finishing putting the surfboard leashes on our ankles, when he responded, “Yeah, I got you covered.”
I was half-joking when I asked him, but I was also half serious. About 20 minutes earlier, two great white sharks had breached out of the water, scaring many surfers out of the water. There has been a general wariness about sharks in the surf community due to an attack on a swimmer a few months ago about a half-mile down.
My friend happens to be a pastor, so I was pretty confident hoping he’d have some divine protection for me. And fewer people in the water meant more waves for us. Many of my friends thought we were nuts for going out.
Needless to say, I am still alive and I had a fun surf session with my friend. But more importantly, I learned some valuable lessons about fear that we all can apply to life and business. That’s because the mind uses fear as its number one tool to keep us stuck and playing small.
Here’s how FEAR hold us back:
Although this is a cool story and I have some great photos from the day, I have to admit like all of us, I am not fearless. In fact, fear keeps me from doing many things to expand my business. I sometimes fear criticism so I don’t voice my opinions enough. Or I can fear rejection so I don’t make enough requests. Or I can fear failure so I don’t take risks like creating an event or a program.
Fear grips us all, the more we exercise our muscle of FAITH, the more we move past the lies of FEAR.
It’s kind of hokey but I like the the saying that FEAR is False Evidence Appearing Real, and that you have to choices: Forget Everything And Run, or Face Everything And Rise.
Where is fear holding you back from your dreams? Whatever it is, take a single action out of faith and have a friend support you, and you too can surf with your own great whites.
Oh, and if you’re interested in my support to break through your fears, I have room for two new clients. Send me an email and we can chat to see if it’s a fit.
P.S. Leave comments below if you have a similar story. I’d love to hear about your fearless adventures too!
